Melodica & Stop Making Sense Competition Mix

In March I made a 30 minute mix for a DJ contest. The prize was a DJ slot at a festival in Croatia! I was a finalist, but alas, not the winner.

The Blue Room on BBC Radio 1, with Chris Coco and Rob Da Bank, was my favorite radio show in the mid-2000s. Chris’ Melodica show is a current favorite. So, yes, I’d love to play a set opening for Chris, at an August sunshine party, on the Dalmatian coast, on a boat!

About the music: “Beautiful Otherness” is one of the many classic tunes I first heard on The Blue Room. Legends Donny Hathaway, Kenny Burrell, and Stanley Turrentine bring the retro summertime vibes, while Sun Airway from my hometown of Philadelphia provides some hazy 21st century bliss. Beats from Ontario, Buenos Aires via Barcelona, and Paris complete the global picture (that’s Junior Boys, Natalia Clavier, and Caro & Garcia respectively).

1. Junior Boys – The animator
2. Bent with Jon Marsh – Beautiful otherness

Spring mix

In a sudden burst of productivity, I made a new “full-length” mix in April, my first in almost three years!

Bryan Ferry’s “Song to the Siren” had me transfixed from the first listen. It sent me on a trip through his back catalog, as well as the back catalogs of Tim Buckley and Cocteau Twins. Guitar fans take note, FOUR of the world’s greatest guitarists appear on this one track: David Gilmour, Jonny Greenwood, Phil Manzanera, and Nile Rodgers.

Otherwise, three masters of the vibes appear (Roy Ayers, Milt Jackson of MJQ, and Cal Tjader) as well as two bands from Göteborg (Plej and Little Dragon), a representative from Philadelphia (Dee Dee Sharp), and the patron saints of Between Two Islands (Pet Shop Boys).

Summer mix

And another – the return of the summer mix!

It’s been a summer of reggae at Between Two Islands headquarters. I included a classic from the Wailers and a newly discovered gem from Dennis Brown’s vast catalog. Friendly Fires are possibly my favorite current band, and Oliver Nelson is possibly my favorite arranger; both are overdue for an appearance in one of my mixes. Besides making top quality electronic sounds, Budapest duo Gelka make beautiful and inspiring mixes. Be sure to check out their Mixcloud page to hear for yourself.
